Wenceslau & McCarthy Labs

About Us…

Located in Columbia, SC at the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine, our lab focuses on better understanding vascular physiology in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases with particular interests in resolving the mechanisms of hypertension. Using state of the art equipment, we study the mechanical and biochemical properties of microvascular tissue collected from mice and rats in order to observe the changes induced by various treatments.

Our lab is a combination space shared and maintained by two principal investigators, Drs. Wenceslau and McCarthy who share similar but distinct research interests. Dr. Wenceslau studies the mechanisms associated with the vascular-immune network in hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and sepsis; whereas, Dr. McCarthy studies dysregulation in cellular recycling (autophagy) and energy sensing and how this relates to deterioration in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
